Classic Spanish Sangria

This is an authentic version of the popular wine drink. You can add any fruit that you want, but I find that apples and pears absorb all the rum. This one is not diluted with carbonated beverages. I have much success with red Burgundy wine and white rum, though spiced rum is nice too.

Original recipe yield: 6 servings.
Prep Time: 10 Minutes
Ready In: 2 Hours 10 Minutes

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

Have the fruit, rum, wine, and orange juice well chilled. Slice the lemon, lime and orange into thin rounds and place in a large glass pitcher. Pour in the rum and sugar. Chill in refrigerator for 2 hours to develop the flavours.

When ready to serve, crush the fruit lightly with a wooden spoon and stir in the wine and orange juice. Adjust sweetness to taste.

Renovation tax credit a hit with consumers

OTTAWA–A new poll suggests more than one in three Canadians plan to take advantage of the federal government's home-renovation tax credit.

More than eight in 10 questioned in the Harris-Decima/Canadian Press survey said they were aware of the program, under which eligible applicants can receive a tax rebate of as much as $1,350 if they invest up to $10,000 in renovations on their home.

"Unlike many new tax policies, which only get noticed by accountants and actuaries, the government of Canada has successfully communicated the introduction of the home-renovation tax credit to Canadians," said Harris-Decima's senior vice-president, Jeff Walker.

"This program appears to be helping stimulate the economy as well."

Nationally, 82 per cent of respondents were aware of the home-renovation tax credit, while 17 per cent said they were unaware. Those under age 35 and those with annual incomes below $60,000 were least likely to know of the tax credit.

Overall, 35 per cent of respondents said they planned on taking advantage of the program, while 60 per cent said they would not.

The ratio of those who planned to take advantage of the program increased with income.

More than half of those earning more than $100,000 a year (51 per cent) responded positively, compared with 41 per cent of those making between $60,000 and $100,000 and just 27 per cent of those earning less than $60,000.

Respondents west of Ontario were the most likely to be taking advantage of it.

Some 1,000 Canadians were surveyed June 18-21, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times in 20.

How Does Steven Faux Find Superior Rates?

Interest rates are a concern to borrowers. Because of Steven`s daily contact with lenders, as a Broker Steven knows which project or home attracts a favourable interest rate from one institution, but a higher rate at another. Some institutions, in fact, will only accept mortgage submissions from mortgage brokers.

These rates, and preferences for types of mortgages, can change daily, depending on economic circumstances or based on the size of an institution's portfolio in a particular type of mortgage. Your Mortgage Broker keeps current and knows which lender to approach first. As a result, mortgage rates obtained by Steven Faux are among the best available at the time of placement.

Utilities, materials producers lead resilient TSX 1% higher

Canada ’s S&P/TSX composite index put the finishing touches on an impressive rally Friday as the benchmark rose for the fourth straight day to overcome its steepest single-day setback in almost four months.

Gains of better than 3% from the TSX’s utilities and materials producers led the benchmark 1% higher over the week ended June 26, 2009. Of the benchmark’s ten sectors, only the gauge’s energy and information technology companies failed to participate in the advance.

The resource-heavy benchmark led most of the world’s major equity markets sharply lower Monday, plunging 4.4% on the day, after the World Bank said the global economic slump will be deeper than it forecast just three months ago. After initially forecasting a 1.7% contraction in 2009, the Washington-based lender this week predicted global output will shrink 2.9% this year. The Bank also forecast a more subdued recovery in 2010 than originally forecast... Learn More
